How to hold a hook and wonder wool while crocheting?
Crochet requires only two essential items - a crochet hook/ needle and yarn. One of the initial skills to master is how to effectively handle these crochet tools For right-handed individuals, the hook is held in the right hand while the wonder wool is managed by the left hand. Conversely, left-handed individuals should reverse this orientation.
For the purpose of illustration, we will show the method of holding the crochet hook/needle and the wonder wool with the dominant hand being the right hand.
Holding the Crochet hook/Needle
The crochet hook/needle can be held in two different ways. It is essential to practice both methods to determine which grip suits you best.

2. Pencil grip
Or hold the hook like a pencil, resting the hook on your middle finger and holding it between your thumb and pointer finger. |
Holding the Wonder Wool
While crocheting, it is useful to remember the terminology with regards to the wonder wool. The Working end and the Tail end.

The part connected to the ball of wonder wool is usually called the “working end” and the part of the wonder wool where it ends is called the “Tail end”. If you dominant hand is the right hand then while holding the wonder wool, always ensure that the tail end is on the right and the working end of the wonder wool is on your left.

Now look at the pictures below and learn how to hold the working end of the wonder wool between the fingers of your non dominant hand and apply the correct tension.
To do this, wrap the yarn around your pinky, over your ring finger, under your middle finger, and over your pointer finger.

4.make sure you secure the “working end” of the wonder wool with your thumb and middle finger to create enough tension in the wool for working. Alternatively, you can use the “yarn guide” to secure the wonder wool in place while crocheting.

By weaving the wonder wool in between your fingers, this will apply more tension control as you’re crocheting.
The way I tension my wonder wool is by squeezing my middle and pointer fingers together and lightly letting go when I pull my wonder wool. Alternately you can use a yarn guide to put on your pointer finger to allow the correct tension.
No matter which way you choose to try, when you pull on your wonder wool it should flow smoothly. There shouldn’t be any tugging or tangling.
