How to Make a Magic Ring (Step by Step Photo Tutorial)

The Magic Ring (MR) serves as the foundation for many crochet designs. Subsequently, proceed by single crocheting into the magic ring. Once the magic ring is established, if you can securely release it, feel at liberty to adjust your grip to your customary yarn-holding technique.

Step By Step Photo Instructions

Step1: Turn your left palm to face you. Hold the tail end of the wonder wool in your right hand and place the wool in front of your left palm. Wrap the working end of the wonder wool once around your pinky finger, so that the tail end of the yarn ends up behind your hand.

Step2: Bring the tail end of the yarn up the back of your hand until you can drape it over your pointer finger and middle finger.

Step 3: Loop it once around your pointer finger and middle finger, so that you end up with a cross at the back of your hand as shown in the picture.

Step 4: Secure this cross with your thumb.

Step 5:Hold the crochet hook facing downwards in your right hand and insert it between the two strand of the cross made.

Step 6: Grab the strand of the wonder wool while is under the cross with the crochet hook. Make sure that the tip is facing away from you, and grab onto the working yarn.

Step 7: Rotate the hook so that the tip faces you again.

Step 8: Draw up a loop on the hook. If you need more tension in the working yarn, move your middle finger away
from you.

Step 9: Once you have one loop on the crochet hook, put the crochet hook under the working yarn one more time as shown in the picture.

Step 10: Now Yarn over i.e Pull the wonder wool through the loop on the hook. There should be only one loop left on the hook after this.

Once you have created this loop, take it out of your right fingers and you will see a loop. if nothing comes apart at this stage, it means you have created your magic loop successfully.

Once the magic loop is done, we will now move on to creating single crochets inside the magic ring which will complete our magic ring. For that, we need to follow the steps given below:

Step 1: Hold the Magic Ring with the middle finger and your thumb and secure the magic loop in place.

Step 2: While holding the crochet needle in the right hand, put the needle hook inside the magic ring from the top and grab the working end of the wonder wool from front to back inside this magic ring

Step 3: Grab the working end of the wonder wool from front to back inside this magic ring.

Step 4: you will have two loops on the crochet hook now.

Step 5: Yarn over i.e put the crochet hook facing towards you under the working end of the yarn as shown in the picture.

Step 6: Pull the yarn inside the existing two loops on the hook.

You will be left with one loop on the hook after this which means you have successfully created one single crochet.

Step 7: Repeat Steps 1-2 to create as many single crochets (SC) as the pattern calls for.
Step 8: Once done with the single crochets (SC) , pull the tail end of the wonder wool until the magic ring disappears.

This creates your Single crochets in the Magic Ring.

To end the round, we will close the loop with a slip stitch. For this, insert the needle hook from front to back in the last left stitch of the single crochet made in the previous round. Now grab the working end of the wonder wool with the needle hook and pull it inside this stitch and simultaneously inside the loop on the needle hook so you are left with only one loop on the needle hook. This completes the first round as well.
